6/ Bělečský písník (sand mine excavation lake)

Altitude: 237–240 m above sea level
Area: 3.9 ha (oldest sand mine excavation lake – natural monument) and 8.6 ha (younger lake)
Material: Early Quaternary (Pleistocene) sand and gravel washed by the Orlice River

The sand mine, where mining ceased in the 1970s, was declared a natural monument in 1983. Communities of exposed sands, wet alder forests and ponds are the object of protection there. Management interventions such as removal of woody debris, dredging of pools, removal of sod, cutting of fast spreading Common Reed and the Wood Small-reed, have been implemented against the overgrowth of the sands. Breeding of Fallow Deers and fish overpopulating have caused an undiserable eutrophication (excessive nutrient enrichment). To the north-west of the site there is a sand pit, which was mined between 2000 and 2016. Southwest of the natural monument, a new sand pit was opened in 2018 and mining is still ongoing.
