15/ Úhřetice – Tuněchody loam mine

Area: 15 ha
Material: Quaternary loess, loess, weathered and flood loam

 

Good quality fine-grained brick-making soil was mined at this site. A brickwork was established there in 1897 and worked until its closure around 2012. The wall of the clay mine was up to 20 m high in the early 1960s. The area contains warm grassy slopes, exposed clay areas and ponds of various depth, which are inhabited by rare animal and plant species.

 

Plants

Xerophilic species: Hawkweed Oxtongue (Picris hieracioides), Chick-pea Milk-vetch (Astragalus cicer), Large Garden (Thymus pulegioides), Longleaf (Falcaria vulgaris)

Species of disturbed soil: Strawberry Clover (Trifolium fragiferum), Stinking Hawk's-beard (Crepis foetida subsp. rhoeadifolia)

Wetland species: Branched Horsetail (Equisetum ramosissimum), Lesser Centaury (Centaurium pulchellum)

 

Invertebrates

Xerophilic species: oil-beetle Meloe scabriusculus, Black Oil-beetle (Meloe proscarabaeus), Old World Swallowtail (Papilio machaon), Green Tigerbeetle (Cicindela campestris), tiger beetle Cicindela sylvicola, longhorn beetle Calamobius filum, Buff-tailed Bumblebee (Bombus terrestris), Black-backed Meadow Ant (Formica pratensis)

 

Vertebrates

Xerophilic species: Sand Lizard (Lacerta agilis), Slow Worm (Anguis fragilis); bramborníček černohlavý (Saxicola rubicola), European Stonechat (Riparia riparia), Grey Partridge (Perdix perdix)

Combination of dry and wetland biotopes: European Common Toad (Bufo bufo), European Green Toad (Bufotes viridis); Western Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus)
